Eternally Yours · Generation 2

Chapter 2.17

One morning while I was finishing my work in the garden I got a phone call.  I expected it to be just like the one before — another crazy photography job.

It wasn’t.  I was crushed by the information I heard.

I don’t know how long I sat on the back porch.  It felt like days.

Garrett finally came out to find me.

“What’s wrong, hun?  You’ve been out here for an hour.”

“My mom…she’s…PREGNANT!”

“Oh, baby.  I’m sorry.  We’ll get our chance.  I promise.”

I was about to burst into tears.  I didn’t know what to say.  It felt like a cosmic betrayal.  It was bad enough we were pregnant together the first time.  I know she’s a fairy and has a ridiculously long life but for heaven’s sake I’m her daughter!  I should be having babies not her!  And I CAN’T!

“I have to go make the girls’ breakfast.  They’ll be hungry and they have school.”

“Ok, ok.  You make their breakfast and I’m calling in sick today.  We will spend the day together.  Relax and regroup.”

“Thanks, babe.”

“We can get through this, Molls.  You’ll see.”

I wished I believed him.

I got the girls fed and off to school.  And I moped.  It just wasn’t fair.

Thank goodness for Garrett.  He kept me busy the whole afternoon.

We decided to head downtown and try the new restaurant that opened.  It had its grand opening the day after we moved in so we were newbies together.

Garrett told me to order whatever I wanted…Lobster, of course!

After out entrees showed up I thought I should break the ice with something I’d been thinking about recently.

“Babe, I’ve been thinking.  Why don’t we try adoption?”

The silence was palpable.  I didn’t know what he was going to say to that idea.  To be honest I wasn’t thrilled about it but we wanted another baby.  I know there are plenty who need families out there.  This could be our chance.

I don’t know, Babe.  I’ll need to think about it.  Let’s give ourselves another few months and if we don’t have a baby soon, let’s adopt around Snowflake Day.

I sat silently for a bit.  That wasn’t the answer I wanted but it would have to do for now.  It was time for desert anyway.  I wasn’t about to pass up crepes.  It would help my bad attitude anyway.

“You know, Garrett, the girls have dance class after school.  They will be away for another 4 hours.  We could…practice.”

“WAITER?!  Check please!”
