We soon learned Mollie was a witch. I should have known as much since she didn’t sprout wings as a toddler. Ah well, such is life.
Mollie is so good with her little brother. Just like she’s always been. She’s taken to tutoring him. He loves it but you know how little brothers can be.
“Good job, Ollie! I knew you’d catch on!”
“Well, DUH! I would have gotten it eventually, Mollie. In fact, all your blabblering slowed me down a lot.”
“Oh, I see. Yeah, you totally would have figured out that Canada is NOT in Europe all on your own…when you FAILED YOUR TEST! Oh, by the way, Mexico is not an island…you should fix that.”
“MOOOOOOOOOM! Mollie’s being mean! She’s saying I’m dumb!”
“I DID NOT! MOOOOOOOOM HE’S LYING!”
Almost as soon as she could, Mollie took her college placement tests. She scored high but not as high as we had thought she would. She was also becoming more quiet and withdrawn.
I could tell something was bothering Mollie but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. I decided her moping had to stop and I called her into the family room to chat.
“Honey, what’s wrong?”
She looked like she was going to burst into tears but she finally told me.
“Momma, I don’t want you to think badly of me…but I HATE being a ghost. I love you and Dad and I know that you meant no harm in having me but the kids are cruel. I just didn’t want to say anything because I knew Dad would feel guilty since he’s the reason I am a ghost.”
I really didn’t know what to say to that. It was heart-wrenching to hear that my baby was so upset but was trying to protect our feelings by not telling us. I decided then and there to find a way to fix this for her.
I spoke with Victor about the situation that night.
“I just don’t know what to do, Vic. She’s hurting. I read in a book about genies that might be able to turn her human but I don’t know how I feel about it.”
“Do it. Find a lamp. If we can make this right we have to try. We owe it to her. I owe it to her. We will find a way.”
And that’s exactly what we did. I am proud to say I did whatever I could for Mollie. I even…dumpster dove. I know. Gross. I need to shower just from thinking about it.
It paid off though. I found that stupid lamp!
“I wish that Mollie Lox was alive!”
“IT SHALL BE DONE!”
“HOLY HALIBUT! MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM SOMETHING HAPPENED!”
“Honey! You’re beautiful!”
Having only know my daughter as a yellow ectoplasm I was astonished at how beautiful she was. I mean, she was beautiful as a yellow spirit but she was stunning as a human.
I left Mollie to admire her new self. I found Victor and told him we needed a vacation. Or at least I did. He was welcome to join me if he wanted. We went on an all expenses paid trip to Monte Vista. We left Mollie in charge because we knew she was responsible. After all, she is going to be a doctor one day.
“Don’t break my heart, Garrett.”
We won’t make that mistake twice.
